There should be no doubt now that Microsoft’s mobile platform is now ready for prime time. Windows Phone has just recorded its highest year-on-year growth among the top five mobile platforms, and now sits solidly in third place.
The latest IDC numbers for the mobile market reveal that Android continued its overwhelming assault with 187 million units shipped, while Apple came in second at 31.2 million units.
Windows Phone settled in third place with 8.7 million units of smartphones, while devices powered by the BlackBerry OS amounted to 6.8 million in the second quarter of the year. This actually represents an increase of 77.6 percent for Windows Phone from the second quarter of 2012, easily the highest.
In terms of individual vendors, Nokia, unsurprisingly, ruled the Windows Phone land and accounted for 81.6 percent share of all Windows Phone powered devices that shipped in the past quarter. The company shipped 7.1 million smartphones in this period.
This positive growth and progressive momentum is something that the Finnish telecom giant would like to see continue, as it heads into the important third and fourth quarters of the year.
Perhaps surprisingly, Samsung unit shipments for the quarter came in at a clean 1 million (11.5 percent), which makes it an impressive 233.3 percent increase from the 0.3 million units the Korean giant shipped in the second quarter of 2012.
This meant that HTC had to settle for third place 0.4 million units (4.6 percent) for Q2 2013, while Huawei rounded up the vendors table with shipments of 0.2 million units (2.3 percent).
This is good news. There is some growth. We should start seeing even more because Windows Phones are are becoming more available from more carriers and more brands. It might not be as much as the others, but it’s still almost 9 million that were not shipped last quarter. Plus, any phone purchased from anyone is potential for even more phones from either someone have multiple phones or telling friends they like the phone. All the people telling Microsoft to scrap WP are either crazy or just bias. They’ll probably hit 10% before we know it. Once that happens, that’s when the games really begin.
