App Watch: Gallery HD

The list of image viewers and photo managers that are available for Windows 8 is a long one, but you will have to think really hard to name an app that matches Gallery HD in presentation and polish.

Developer Frozen Volcano has created an app that delivers a lot of the features of traditional desktop photo software, while staying true to the Modern UI design aesthetics of Microsoft’s new platform. The downright best thing about this app is the attention to detail at every corner.

At its very core (as the name suggest) this is a gallery app — allowing you to view and browse your photos and videos from either a local folder on the device, a network drive or even an SD card.

You can then run them in a slideshow, complete with effects like fade and zoom.

But you get very detailed information for images from basic stuff like name, date, dimensions and file size, to advanced details like camera model, focal length, exposure time and more. The images in a folder are perfectly displayed and touch optimized options like tap and pinch zoom are available.

You get to add and sort images as favorites, and images can be set to display filling the entire screen (goodbye to those horrid black bars). The app also has support for live tiles.

The free version is ad-supported, but a paid option is available, and the app integrates perfectly on tablets as the default photo viewer whenever you select images.
