New! Check out our iPhone 5 Picture gallery Today was Apple’s live (long awaited) press conference where they were widely expected to show off the iPhone 5. Tim Cook took the stage and talked about the expansion of Apple stores across the globe. The Apple Stores welcomed 83 million visitors last year and are available in 13 countries. Interesting stat: The MacBook Air and Macbook Pro combined ranked #1 in the US in Notebook marketshare for the last 3 months. In July it was 27%. In the last quarter, they sold 17 million iPads for a total of 84 million units. Last year, the iPad had 62% market share and now they claim the number is at 68%. Tim Cook said that the “iPad accounts for 91% of all the web traffic from tablets. I don’t know what these other tablets are doing.” “They must be in warehouses or on store shelves, or maybe in someone’s drawer.” Contrasting the iPad corporate use with the nonexistent (so far) PC tablet market, he said “Almost all of the Fortune 500 (94%) are testing or deploying iPads. And they’re investing in custom apps. This is something none of them do on the PC.” Talking about application use, he had the following stats:

  • App Store has over 700k apps.
  • 250k of those apps are tailored for the iPad.
  • 90% of the apps in that 700k are downloaded every month.
  • The average customer uses over 100 apps.
He said over 400 million IOS devices have been sold so far. Then they introduced the iPhone 5.
  • Made entirely of glass and aluminium.
  • 18% thinner than iPhone 4s at 7.6mm
  • 20% lighter than the 4S at 112 grams
  • Retina display, 326 PPI
  • 4 inch display
  • 16:9 aspect ratio
  • 1136 x 640 screen resolution
Explaining why they made it bigger, they say: “It’s because of your hand. It should fit there. That’s how we designed the iPhone 5.”
Bullsh*t – Now they are making themselves look foolish, are they saying the 4 and 4S didn’t fit in the hand?
The phone has a lot of wireless modes – HSPA+, DC-HSDPA and LTE. There’s now a single chip for voice and data, and a single radio chip. It also has new Wi-Fi, 2.4ghz and 5ghz on 802.11n. The Apple A6 chip is included as well. Twice as fast as the A5 and 22% smaller. The graphics do look amazing. [caption id="attachment_24726" align="alignnone" width="640"] iPhone 5 Graphics[/caption] Battery life exceeds that of the 4s.
  • 3G talk time: 8 hours
  • 3G browsing: 8 hours
  • LTE browsing: 8 hours
  • Wi-Fi browsing: 10 hours
  • Video: 10 hours
  • Music: 40 hours
  • Standby: 225 hours
The camera lens is better than anything they have done and it’s Sapphire Crystal. Panorama Mode looks amazing. [caption id="attachment_24738" align="alignnone" width="640"] iPhone 5 Panorama mode[/caption] Facetime is now HD. Facetime now possible over cellular networks… They also have a new connector cable called lightning – all digital, 8-signal design, adaptive interface, improved durability, reversable. [caption id="attachment_24727" align="alignnone" width="640"] The new lightning connector[/caption] They will have an adapter for the old cables… [caption id="attachment_24728" align="alignnone" width="640"] Adapter[/caption] IOS 6 is also revealed here.. Apple have built a map search engine to show points of interest “We have over 100m points of interest.” The new maps look impressive and use 3d cinematic imagery. [caption id="attachment_24729" align="alignnone" width="640"] New Apple Maps and GPS[/caption] They also have introduced a cool new feature called photo stream sharing where they make it easy to share a group of photos with your friends and have comments about the photos shared as well. [caption id="attachment_24730" align="alignnone" width="640"] Apple Photo streaming[/caption] Siri has been improved and is faster. The iPhone 5 comes in black or white. The Iphone 3GS is gone. The iPhone 5 will be available for September 14th pre-order. It will ship on September 21st. IOS 6 is a free upgrade for most Apple devices – It’s coming September 19th. New! • Powerfull…hah? what makes it powerfull? I was afraid this was gona happen, generally when someone is in the lead they become complacent, I know people r gona by the phone, but it’s not much of an upgrade, I was expecting something wow!.. that’s what we’ve come 2 expect from Apple, I’m personally disappointed.

      • “magic is starting to fade”
starting to fade ?!!! no , it WAS a total disappointment.
really , they just shows us a bigger 4s with a little enhancement s.
and what was 4s? 4 with a little enhancements.
yes , there wasn’t any magic to start with .
apple is now chasing the competition , not the other way around.

      • That’s the problem right there, “Good” doesnt sound like Apple..
they’ve also got LTE network support, which everyone else has already had for a long time. Full sRGB color gamut is nice to hear, though not terribly revolutionary. The A6 processor is faster; of course, that’s what we would expect, so nothing special there, either. So, most of those are really just hardware features designed to catch up to everyone else. It has camera features a sapphire crystal, but it’s still just 8 megapixels – nothing terribly innovative like high resolution oversampling or optical image stabilization to challenge Nokia. Oh, but there’s the panorama mode, which Apple says is the most amazing feature in the iPhone 5 (even though everyone else has had that feature for years). Three microphones for noise cancellation is a good idea, too; that reminds me of the old HTC Touch Pro 2

      • I agree with you, The first iphone was a big WOW, but it seems they are not doing the WOW with the iphone anymore. Its not much of an upgrade for someone who does have an iphone, but for people like me who are still planning on getting one, it is good. I always had basic phones, but this last year I went to using a mac, I have an ipad 3, and I love them. So for an old school Apple fan, I can understand this, but for a newbie of Apple, I am impressed. I just wish I used Apple products sooner.

  • Well, I see a lot of negative comments here, probably pro-Windows 8 phone fanboys! However, I like the new iPhone 5. It is awesome!

  • I said a while back to people when Jobs past away, “Apple is in trouble now! Without an innovative mind like his Apple will not be able to (steal, so to speak) take other companies ideas & revamp to come out with something different.”! Apparently not even their own offerings…
I think Apple may end up out of business, again (like 15 years ago before the US Tax payers, via the federal government, saved them) if they do not get their heads around everything. Start looking for another Jobs like person (maybe without the pompous ways would be nice)!

    • Even the dress is pretty, but wearing it for 5-6 years will still feel boring. I think they won’t understand that.

  • “The average customer uses over 100 apps.”
I looked at all my friends’ iPhone and iPad. They mostly have 20-30 apps. I think it’s more correct if he says.
“The average customer downloaded over 100 apps.”
