nothing else works. I’m not even going to go through the long short list of ridiculous alternatives that have been floated for Metro in the last couple of weeks. There was a good and long run on Twitter about Windows 8 and Metro and believe me, the jokes were good. I’m not even going to take the easy cheap shot and start to yell about how could they have screwed this up that badly. Those articles have been written already. I just think that Metro is the best name for the new tile based interface and I will continue to use the moniker until it doesn’t make any sense. The way I see it, Microsoft have a few alternatives here.
- License the name in a limited manner for use only for Windows 8.
- Stay on this track and find a name we laugh at and ignore
Metro is Microsoft’s design language. They call it Metro because it’s modern and clean. It’s fast and in motion. It’s about content and typography and it’s entirely authentic.I have to agree.]]>
yes. microsoft, please keep calling it Metro!
I agree with you, we need to call it metro. The new naming of Windows 8 Apps and Desktop Apps is just about as terrible an idea as I have seen. I love Microsoft products, but this is over the top terrible. Think of this…
An app that runs in the desktop is a Desktop App on Windows 8. Then we have Windows 8 Apps. They don’t run on Windows 8 Desktop, just on the space formerly known as metro. A metro app is a Windows 8 App. So too is the desktop version of an app in that it runs on Windows 8. The naming is very poor. As a side note, what happens with Windows 9. Will we have Windows 8 Apps and Windows 9 Apps, and then Desktop Apps? Will Windows 8 Apps run on Windows 9? Yes probably, but this adds confusion.
…I know that wasn’t very clear. That was my silly point. The naming sucks.
Who Cares!!!!
Many people do. The concern isn’t that it is a name we liked, rather the NEW naming is confusing. IT will have a concern with it. And try to explain this to non-techies.
“You need a Windows 8 App”
“Oh, an app that runs on Windows 8”
“No, that could be a Desktop App. You need a Windows 8 App”
Then there is Windows 9. Will they be called a “Windows 9 App”?
Naming is important for explaining to others, and understanding by one’s self.
I don’t care if they call it Metro or something else, just don’t use the OS name as the app name.
Yes it’s METRO because we need to break away from the WIN number scheme. It’s getting more complcated.
The Metro name will stick with all those who have been part of it’s development cycle. So come on all everyone stuff the MS stupidity and spread the word: Metro, Metro, Metro….!
