False alarm, folks! Looks like one of the more important features in Windows 11 will not be exclusive to the new operating system. DirectStorage will also be available to users running Windows 10.

Label this development as poor communication regarding the new OS’s hardware requirements or file it as a U-turn based on feedback from disgruntled gamers. But the initial word that this high-end feature would be exclusive to the new platform sure did raise some eyebrows.

Now, though, Redmond has confirmed that DirectStorage is compatible with the older operating system, and its arrival on Windows 10 will enable developers to reach as many gamers as possible.

This new entry in the DirectX Developer Blog announces the availability of a developer preview of the DirectStorage API while explaining that the SDK will be compatible with Windows 10 from version 1909 and up.

The company explains:

“Microsoft is committed to ensuring that when game developers adopt a new API, they can reach as many gamers as possible. As such, games built against the DirectStorage SDK will be compatible with Windows 10, version 1909 and up; the same as the DirectX 12 Agility SDK.”

DirectStorage is one of the most promising technologies in gaming right now, as it is designed to streamline the way game data gets processed. Taking advantage of the modern storage hardware and speedy NVMe SSDs, it aims to reduce game load time and support huge open world games.

Stuff that dreams are made of!

One point that merits mention is that while Windows 10 will officially support DirectStorage, games running on Windows 11 will benefit further from new storage stack optimizations.

In other words, Windows 11 will still be the best way to play the latest video games on PC.

At least, this confirmation that older systems will be in on the action negates the potential negative effects on the adoption rate of the DirectStorage feature, yet at the same time ensures that people have the incentive to migrate to the new operating system.
