First Redstone 5 Build Hits The Fast Ring

Microsoft today released Windows 10 build 17661 to the Fast ring of the Windows Insider Program, making this the first Redstone 5 version to make it to this channel.

Users enrolled with Skip Ahead already have had access to these builds.

With work on Redstone 4, better known as the April 2018 Update, already out the gates, Redmond has shifted focus to what’s next for its operating system. The company also warned Insiders yesterday that this was their last to chance to hop off the preview program without doing a factory reset.

And well, this new preview build is here, and it brings with it a number of cool new features, many of which are a continuation of the currently available ones.

As the company announced, this is the first RS5 build to be made available to Fast ring Insiders.

In terms of new additions, we have what the company calls a modern sniping experience, which has been designed to help users effortlessly capture and annotate what they see on the screen.

Screen Sketch is now actually an app, first introduced as part of Windows Ink Workspace. This basically means that it can be updated via the Microsoft Store, and will also show up in the list when you press Alt + Tab. It now even supports multiple windows and tabs.

Speaking of which, the company continues to experiment with and test the Sets feature, and will be fine tuning this highly anticipated feature over the coming months.

If you like the Acrylic effect, you probably will love that the entire Task View background now has it.

Also part of the package are improvements to the HEIF support, which is High Efficiency Image File Format that compresses images to approximately half the size of JPEG.

A few other additions round up the deal, for what is a feature packed build, well worth installing.
