Microsoft finally made public Windows 11 today, a fresh new version of its OS that comes with an enhanced UI along with improvements centered around performance and productivity.

And alongside the unveil, the minimum system requirements for the operating system are also out in the open. These are important for those of you who are planning to try out Windows 11 ahead of its release, or if you are planning a new system solely for it.

Redmond will roll out Windows 11 later this year, but obviously not every device will be able to run it.

You need a machine that has these minimum specs to be able to deploy the new OS:

  • 1GHz dual-core 64-bit processor
  • 4GB of RAM
  • 64GB storage
  • 9-inch display with at least 1366 x 768 resolution
  • UEFI, Secure Boot & TPM 2.0
  • DirectX 12 compatibility graphics with WDDM 2.x

As you can see, there are a few big changes.

The biggest being that Windows 11 is a 64-bit only operating system. While the OS will continue to offer support for 32-bit software, Microsoft will not be releasing a 32-bit version of Window 11. To be fair, this is a change that has been long overdue, and good to see Microsoft finally making the jump.

Other than that, you will now need at least a 9-inch screen to run it, with 64GB storage minimum.

These changes should make the Windows 11 experience better on all devices, but at the same time it also increases the specification requirement for budget hardware. Gone are the days of a substandard usage experiences on bare minimum hardware running older versions of the OS.

If you would like to see if your PC meets the requirements, then you can download a tool called Windows PC Health Check to see where you stand on the hardware front.
