Hotmail Is Now Officially Retired

Never thought I’d live to say this, but the classic email platform, Hotmail, is now officially dead. Microsoft has just confirmed that it has completed the transition of its email users to Outlook.com.

Redmond initiated the transition six weeks earlier, with the goal of moving all the users of the extremely popular Hotmail service over to its Outlook.com platform.

The software titan shared the news in a blog post:

“Our belief is that as people start using the new experience, they will come to love it even more than they loved Hotmail. We are keenly listening to what our customers have to say, and we’ll make the right set of adjustments to ensure that we make the experience as great as it can be.”

According to Microsoft, the transition was in of itself a real challenge — the company had to move 300 million active accounts to Outlook.com while preserving over 150 million gigabytes (yikes!) of data that included emails, contacts, calendar, folders and personalized user preferences.

But the mission, is nevertheless, accomplished.

While users can still use their @Hotmail email addresses, they will now have to work with the modern and fresh look of Outlook.com instead of the familiar and classic interface.

Microsoft has also promised several new features in the coming months, and has debuted two new ones like support for SMTP, along with deeper and better SkyDrive integration for users to share files without leaving the inbox.

Requiescat in pace, Hotmail — it was good knowing you.
