This is one of the more popular questions asked – How much is Windows 8?

The answer (as usual) is, it depends.

There are 4 versions of Windows 8

Windows 8

Windows 8 is the basic edition of Windows for the x86 and x86-64 architectures. This edition contains features aimed at the home market segment and provides all of the basic new, Windows 8 features.

Windows 8 Pro

Windows 8 Pro succeeds Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate and is targeted towards enthusiasts and business users; it includes all the features of Windows 8. Additional features include operating as a Remote Desktop server, the ability to participate in a Windows Server domain, Encrypting File System, Hyper-V, and Virtual Hard Disk Booting, Group Policy as well as BitLocker and BitLocker To Go.

Windows Media Center functionality will be available only for Windows 8 Pro as a free “add-on.”

Windows 8 Enterprise

Windows 8 Enterprise provides all the features in Windows 8 Pro (except the ability to install the Windows Media Center add-on), with additional features to assist with IT organization. This edition was released on August 16, 2012 and is available to Software Assurance customers, as well as MSDN and Technet Professional subscribers.

Windows RT

Windows RT will only be available pre-installed on ARM-based devices such as tablet PCs and was named for the Windows Runtime (WinRT) development platform that Microsoft is introducing in Windows 8. It will include touch-optimized desktop versions of the basic set of Office 2013 applications to users—Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, and support device encryption capabilities.

Windows 8 Pricing

Here’s what we (think) we do know:

  • The Windows 8 upgrade from Windows XP, Vista and 7 will cost $39.99, a price available exclusively online for those wishing to download the software without a DVD option.
  • Those purchasing the Windows 8 Pro upgrade through also will have the option of purchasing a backup DVD for $15 plus shipping and handling
  • The full (with DVD) Windows 8 upgrade from Windows 7 reportedly will cost $69.99.
  • Those purchasing Windows 7 PCs between early June 2012 and January 2013 can (for an additional $14.99) upgrade to Windows 8 Pro
  • Microsoft will offer a Windows 8 to Windows 8 Pro upgrade option at retail stores for $69.99 until January 31st when the price reverts to $99.99
  • Windows 8 Pro reportedly will cost $199.99 after the promotional retail price of $69.99 expires on January 31st 2013.

At this point, we have no information about Windows 8 Enterprise or Windows RT pricing.
