The rumors of a 12-inch Windows RT tablet from HTC first hit the web back in December last year, where the hardware vendor was said to be developing a tablet with a resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels.
Sure, HTC never officially confirmed the fact that such a device was in the works.
But now it appears that plans to release the large tablet have been cancelled. A new report over at Bloomberg citing unnamed sources reveals that the HTC management felt that there would be a very limited demand for such a product.
Add to this the fact that such a device would, obviously, cost too much.
Nevertheless, the same report confirms that HTC will go ahead and launch a smaller 7-inch tablet powered by Windows RT. This new device is said to sport a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of memory and 16GB storage.
This affordable new tablet is said to be on track for release later this year.
It is hard to classify this move. On one hand this means a remarkable Windows RT product may not see daylight and the Windows RT platform misses out on a chance for some much needed diversity, on the other hand it shows where the market priorities lie.
With the news that Windows RT 8.1 is set to offer support for devices with smaller display sizes, most hardware vendors are hurrying to release affordable slates in time for the Back to School and Holiday shopping seasons.
