I had written about how I thought it was time for Microsoft to go 64 bit only with the next version of Windows – Windows 8.
Well, I am a big fan of the site Arstechnica and the other day while surfing, here’s what I read..
Furthermore, techniques such as Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR), a security technique which involves randomly arranging the positions of key data areas in memory to thwart hacking, can currently be defeated on 32-bit browsers through techniques such as heap-spraying, which some exploits use to execute arbitrary code. Malicious programs can thus fill the program’s address space with malicious code so that even if a random memory address is chosen, there is still an excellent chance that the exploit code is executed. Heap-spraying and other malware methods aren’t as viable with a large, 64-bit memory space.
Making 64-bit the defaultAlong with Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 hit RTM on July 22, 2009. This is the first 64-bit only Windows server operating system, and many are expecting Windows 8, which is currently slated for 2012, to be the first 64-bit only Windows client OS.
Seems great minds think alike huh?
Windows 8 needs to be exclusively 64 bit…no doubt about it…

I am impressed, I have to say. Really seldom do I come across a site that’s both informative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you’ve hit the nail on the head. Your opinion is important; the matter is something that not a lot of people are speaking intelligently about. I am really happy that I stumbled across this in my search for something relating to it.

I am convinced Windows 8 will be 64 bit only, Windows 2008 R2 signals the change quite clearly. Its time to leave the old outdated 32bit behind us and embrace the future of x64 computing. Apple did this switch quite some time ago with snow leopard becoming 64 bit only.
