Boy, Microsoft sure can be awfully low key sometimes! The software titan has recently indicated, almost in passing, that Lync Server 2013 is now supported on the newly released Windows Server 2012 R2.
It can be enabled by deploying an update that was released earlier this month. Redmond confirmed the news in the shortest of blog posts, confirming that users can deploy this new update that comes with no less than 13 fixes to Lync Server 2013.
However, the company’s knowledge base article actually omits mentioning the support for the new server operating system.
Lync Server 2013 is the latest version of Microsoft’s unified communication solution, and hit RTM status last year in October. Back then, the company originally hinted that general availability was planned for the first quarter of this year.
However, the product was officially released shortly after the RTM build was launched.
And even though Lync products (Lync Server and Lync Online) are slow to evolve, Redmond has outlined some ambitious future plans for this business and enterprise solution.
Microsoft aims to launch a new version of Lync in the second quarter of 2014, which according to the company, will attain enterprise voice support in the summer of next year — think Skype integration.
The company has also recently updated its Lync client apps on Windows Phone, iPhone and iPad.
