Microsoft Considers Surface Pro A PC, Calls It A Perfect Fit For Enterprises

You may be forgiven if you thought both Surface slates that Microsoft recently launched were tablets. Prepare to be surprised then, as Microsoft likes to think of Surface Pro as a PC.

Yes, an absolute, downright and blatant PC, as ever there was one.

It may be ease to believe otherwise, though — what with both devices sharing so much in common. There is the similar tablet style form factor, a 10.6-inch touchscreen, and the option of using Touch and Type Cover that double up as keyboards.

But Panos Panay, the man in charge of the Surface division at Microsoft would like to you believe that the company did not design the Surface Pro as a tablet, even with its tablet like appearance.

A report over at GeekWire says that Panay made a little presentation at Microsoft’s US Public Sector CIO Summit earlier today, and without discussing the sales performance of the slates, had this to state:

“Surface RT was designed as a tablet first. I want to be super-clear on what we designed Pro for. Very easy to understand. This should be the fastest PC you pick up. Period. People get confused because of the form factor. … It was designed as a PC. We often get judged as designing a heavier tablet and not enough battery life. Be very clear: What we designed was a PC.”

Mr. Surface, however, gave confirmation that Microsoft is actively looking to expand the market for the Surface line of devices, and propped that the devices were designed for large corporations and the government sector in mind:

“We did design them to get the consumer market first, or retail. No doubt. But we’re right on the cusp of turning that corner and bringing these products into the market where we really want to be.”

So there you have it, folks, a bunch of insightful comments straight from the head of the Surface division at Microsoft. It had been a while since we’ve heard something from the man.

Right then, which groups are you lot in? Do you consider the Surface Pro a tablet, or have you placed the sleek device in the PC category all along the way? Share your preference with others in the comment box below.
