announcement by CEO Satya Nadella talks about the significant changes that the company is going through, and the need for further reorganization in order to better align with this new strategy. It also alludes to some redundancies and overlaps due to the purchase of Nokia:
“The first step to building the right organization for our ambitions is to realign our workforce. With this in mind, we will begin to reduce the size of our overall workforce by up to 18,000 jobs in the next year. Of that total, our work toward synergies and strategic alignment on Nokia Devices and Services is expected to account for about 12,500 jobs, comprising both professional and factory workers.”While the Nokia factor was inevitable, the cut extends further into the core of Microsoft too, and the company will also terminate 5,500 jobs from internal departments. Cutting jobs is never an easy decision for the management, even if they are a necessary change to keep a company on the right path. But for Microsoft, the results of this active reorganization are already showing, at least in terms of share prices. One can only hope the employees that are let go get some good severance packages, so as to lessen their financial burdens as they look for alternate opportunities.]]>
I think you can safely cut the same percentage from the Eye On Windows staff. Don’t get me wrong, I feel bad for those losing the jobs.
What’s your point? Are you saying people here should be fired or that 18,000 is such a small percentage of the company it’ll barely effect their efficiency?
Not sure where you are going with your comment Mike. Want to elaborate for us?
It is just that when thing are directed at You they hit home. Most humans aren’t really to good at empathy. One man, a hundred, a thousand, how many dose it take until it is a disaster?
Still not really clear on your comments. I think you are trying to say the article was too dry and factual and not enough empathy for the employees who are going to be laid off? I’ve been laid off so many times in my life that it is not even funny so I know how they feel and I bet most of the readers do as well.
I hate to see all these people go, but I think a lot of people have commented over the years about how big Microsoft has become. I hope they gave them 6 months worth of pay at least
They will be lucky to get six weeks pay.
What this comes down to, is damage control for the mistakes that Ballmer made. Of course upper management won’t pay for these mistakes just people like you and me.
