Microsoft Drops Hint For A Surface Laptop In The Near Future

Redmond currently has two Surface products on the store shelves (even if one of them is suffering from supply issues), but the company is seemingly hard at work trying to expand its hardware family.

Besides, ever since Microsoft announced its hardware plans, there have been nonstop rumors pointing to a complete lineup of mobile devices from smartphones to ultrabooks.

Panos Panay, the head of the Surface division at Microsoft, said in an interview with ABC News that the Surface family was set to see some new members added to it in the coming months. Though he stopped shy of commenting on the possibility of full-featured Surface laptop for this year:

“It will take some time for the product [the Surface Pro] to adopt. This is a good marathon for us, we are pretty excited about the short term and the long term. When you ask if you are making a laptop or a notebook, we have a pretty good selection of things we have been working on. It’s pretty exciting.”

Mike Angiulo, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for Windows Planning, however commented that Redmond was still considering the classic laptop form factor, and a notebook under the Surface brand was not out of the realm of possibility:

“Our partners are doing a very good job with laptops right now. We started thinking at the beginning at Windows 8, what is something that someone isn’t going to be able to come out with? The notebook form factor is alive and well, we are just working with partners on those.”

Obviously, it is not just about building a laptop and slapping the Surface brand sticker on it. How Redmond differentiates a Surface notebook from other hardware vendors is pivotal.
