Microsoft Drops Hints Of Windows Phone 8 Upgrades And New Devices

Word is gathering pace that Redmond is hard at work on new versions of its mobile operating system, and a company official may just have confirmed that during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

A recent article on PC Mag has Greg Sullivan, the senior marketing manager at Microsoft suggest that the Windows Phone 8 platform is upgradable. Sullivan reportedly said:

“We’re going to have an upgrade path going forward. Windows Phone 8 can evolve. We have an architecture that enables portability and is fundamentally hardware independent.”

Though he refrained from sharing any more details, recent rumors propose that we could expect at least two new Windows Phone 8 upgrades to arrive on devices before the year is out. One of them was, of course, spotted on the leaked HTC smartphone, codenamed Tiara.

It could possibly be the Widows Phone 8 GDR2 platform release that is set to arrive in the second quarter of the year. What the next one is could be anybody’s guess — it could be another new version or the company may deploy Windows Phone Blue directly after the first upgrade.

But that’s not all, folks. The near future could see several new devices powered by the Windows Phone platform, as Sullivan noted:

“Over the course of the next several months, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some exciting new devices.”

So whether we get one new upgrade or two, this much appears to be certain is that Redmond’s mobile platform could have quite a busy year as several Microsoft hardware partners are getting ready to launch a host of new devices powered by the mobile OS.
