Although the software titan officially ended support for Windows 10 version 1511 last month, it had a change of heart and has announced that it is extending support for the OS for another six months.
Until April.
The new Windows as a service model that Microsoft is now pursuing has each version of the operating system seeing end of support after anywhere between a year and half to two years. Version 1511, the first feature update to the OS was due for a sunset last month.
However, Redmond announced that it is extending support for a full six months, until April 2018.
This version of the operating system, as the name gives away, was released in November 2015.
The OS did not see another major update until the Anniversary Update that saw a rollout in August 2016. Interestingly, this change means that version 1511 has a later end of life date than version 1607, which is still listed tentatively as March 2018.
Expect this date to be bumped up at some point.
All these changes, and with version 1511 now back in the fold, mean that Microsoft is now supporting four versions — namely 1511, 1607, 1703, and 1709. A far cry from the previously stated company goal to actively support the two latest feature updates of Windows 10.
Worth a mention that this change only applies to those using Windows 10 Education or Enterprise, as those rocking consumer SKUs have already been upgraded to a new version long ago.
