Microsoft Launches Office Mobile For Android Smartphones

Microsoft recently released an iOS version of Office 365 for subscribers, and now a similar app is available for Android users, allowing them to access to the popular productivity application in the palm of their hands.

Palm of their hands because, once again, it is only available as a smartphone app — a tablet version for Android should hopefully be coming soon, though Julia White, the general manager of the Office Division does not make any sorts of promises either way in a blog post that announces the news.

The app itself is largely unchanged from the iOS version and sports the same UI, only with an Android touch. It allows users to edit and create Word, Excel and PowerPoint files on the go.

This release finally brings Office to the three major smartphone platforms. All three of iOS Android and Windows Phone now feature the software, though the Windows Phone version is native and does not require an Office 365 subscription like its counterparts.

Many of the major features of the productivity suite are available in the app — everything from the ability to create documents to inserting charts, shapes, graphics and animation.

Complex and advanced options are still missing, however. Font editing, for example is limited to adding bold, italics, font color and highlighting. But then again, these are the same features that are available on other Office smartphone apps and probably will get a look at in future updates.

The app can sync with SkyDrive and SkyDrive Pro to store documents in the cloud, and sharing options are aplenty as you would expect, allowing users to send documents either through SkyDrive or via email.

Office for Android is now available on the Google Play Store for free, though users will have to log into an Office 365 account to start editing or viewing documents.

Additionally, the app is only available in the US market for now. Users in other countries should be able to download the app in the coming weeks.
