Microsoft Planning Stores In Detroit And Honolulu

With the company’s new hardware centric focus, Microsoft Stores have been getting prime attention. Redmond now has 51 store locations across the United States and Canada, with more being planned.

As a matter of fact, Microsoft shared its plans to open six more locations this year.

Now four of these six locations are upgrades to existing (but temporary) Microsoft Stores that the company launched for the Holidays late last year. They will be promoted to permanent locations. The first all new store is actually set to open by March in San Antonio, Texas.

But that is not all, it seems.

A glance at the Microsoft Careers website shows that the company is actually planning two more retail locations this year, and is looking to hire people for these new stores.

One of them is in the Motor City — home of General Motors, Chrysler and Ford.

This would make it the first Microsoft Store in Detroit. In fact, Crain’s Detroit Business confirms that Redmond has already posted a job opening for a store leader for its retail outlet in the city, and the new store should be ready by mid-2013.

Additionally, a future Microsoft Store is also planned in Honolulu, Hawaii. If opened, it would make it only the second store outside of the contiguous region — San Juan, Puerto Rico is the first.

This is in addition to the company’s rumored expansion in Europe. Word on the street is that the Microsoft is planning a bunch of different stores in the Old Continent, with the first one ready to open for business later this year in the United Kingdom. London, if reports are to be believed.
