In a perfect world this is something that would have been done years ago. But it appears that cross-platform apps compatibility for Microsoft operating systems could finally be a reality.
According to ZDNet, the company might be looking to bring cross-platform compatibility for its Windows 8 and Windows Phone apps. A recent job listing on Microsoft’s Career website states that:
“Are you excited about Windows Phone? Are you passionate about delivering the best possible experience to the developer community? Do you wish the code you write for Windows Store apps would just work on the Windows Phone and vice versa? If so, then this is the role for you!”
Just work, you say? I can live with that.
Details are scarce, but if this is what people believe it is, it could pave way for a large number of Windows Phone 8 to make an appearance on both Windows 8 and Windows RT platforms — something that the Windows Store could use right about now as it lags far behind other competing app stores.
Cross-platform app development is, understandably, a high priority for Redmond, as other platforms already offer this freedom, case in point, iPhone and iPad. Then again, this does not extend to Apple’s OS X operating system.
Of course, there is also speculation that this may have got something to do with the upcoming “Windows Blue” project, whatever that ultimately is.

iPhone and iPad isn’t really cross platform because it is both iOS, that’s like saying applications that run on a laptops and a desktops are cross platform.
You would have thought that Microsoft would be bundling in Xbox into this cross platform compatibility especially as the steam box might bring in extra competition, being able to pit PC gamers against Xbox gamers through Xbox live would be a welcome improvement.
