Security is an illusion. But that doesn’t mean you don’t have to go all the way for protection. This is exactly what Microsoft seems to be doing with Windows 11.

The new OS is already the most secure version of the operating system of all time.

But there is always room for improvement.

Windows 11 Secure Boot

This is why the most recent Windows 11 build that just landed in the Dev channel yesterday brought along some new security features. The release notes in build 25188 make no mention of these security enhancements, but keen Windows watchers were wide awake to notice.

As noted by famed leakster Xeno, a new updated driver is present inside this version of the preview for Microsoft Security Core Boot (msseccore.sys). It comes with version number 10.0.25188.1000, which is a clear indication that it was updated with the latest build.

New Secure Core Boot Driver

All that said, it is hard to confirm what kind of changes Redmond has made within the driver.

Perhaps the slew of UEFI and Secure Boot vulnerabilities that have recently surfaced prompted the company to act quick to harden the boot process further. It was back in February of this year that firmware from several companies were found vulnerable to nearly two dozen threats.

Microsoft and Intel were the two main ones in this list.

Then again, it could also be that Microsoft is coming good on its promise of delivering noticeably better performance on Windows 11 in 2022. These changes could very well be part of those efforts, if not the aforementioned vulnerabilities.

But this much is certain that the software titan is busy with security of Windows 11 right now.

And that is always a good thing.
