With the Windows 8.1 Preview out in public, and the new operating system due for arrival later this year, analysts and market watchers have been filing in their predictions for Microsoft in general and the Windows platform in particular.

But irrespective of what is said, Windows still remains the most dominant force in the OS world.

Microsoft’s flagship operating system was, unsurprisingly, the number one operating system in the world, even as these latest statistics show the slightest of dips in its overall market share.

The numbers provided by market researcher Net Applications show that Windows is now powering around 91.51 percent of computers worldwide. This figure is just a little down from the 91.67 percent market share that was recorded in May 2013.

Going back one year, however, reveals that Microsoft Windows was powering 92 percent of PCs around the world, but one has to consider the swarms and swarms of users that have moved (and are moving) to tablets and smartphones.

Once you do, this little drop, more or less, makes sense.

Microsoft was hoping to put things back on track last year when it launched both Windows 8 and Windows RT — its tablet oriented operating system. Now the technology titan is gearing up for the second round with Windows 8.1, the first major makeover for Windows 8.
