NBC To Use Windows Azure To Stream Sport Events On The Internet

Microsoft and NBC have had a long association. And even though both parties may have recently terminated their MSNBC.com agreement, the partnership is set to continue in a new venture.

Windows Azure, the company’s cloud platform is all ready to help power the Internet streaming of NBC Sport’s sports coverage, starting later this summer.

The company shared the news in a press release saying:

“Microsoft has a broad partner ecosystem, which extends to the cloud. To bring the NBC Sports Group viewing experience to life, Microsoft is working with iStreamPlanet Co. and its live video workflow management product Aventus. Aventus will integrate with Windows Azure Media Services to provide a scalable, reliable, live video workflow solution to help bring NBC Sports Group programming to the cloud.”

Windows Azure is set to help NBC stream over 5,000 hours of both live and on-demand sporting events on NBCSports.com and GolfChannel.com.

Another place where it will be put to good use include NBCOlympics.com during the 2014 Winter Olympics which are set to take place in Sochi, Russia in February next year.

The agreement also includes other NBC events like NFL’s Sunday Night Football, Notre Dame Football, Premier League Soccer, Major League Soccer, the U.S. Open golf tournament along with other PGA events. Sports fans have a valid reason to rejoice!

Microsoft recently brushed up its media serving capabilities when it launched Windows Azure Media Services in January — a service that allows customers to stream on-demand video to consumers to any platform or device.
