That is HUGE. It seems like Microsoft has finally waved the white flag with Metro and is giving users back the control and the beloved desktop. He also seems impressed with the transition back and forth between the desktop and Metro, insinuating that it’s precise and elegant. He says that a Power Management or Power Control button has been added to the Modern UI (Metro) screen. We already talked about that here. What IS interesting is that on screens less than 8.5 inches wide, the button will not be available. That makes sense for preserving precious real estate on a smaller screen. Check out the screenshots. What do you think about this new build? [gallery columns="4" ids="62187,62188,62189,62190,62191,62192,62193,62194,62195"]]]>
Great … let’s hope the new CEO continues this trend of Microsoft responding to consumer demand instead of the Apple-like “Father Knows Best” mantra of old.
magic its about time they’ve seen the light so as to speak which back up what people have bee saying for some time now if there going to have a metro style interface then make it the secondary interface running of the desktop not as the main interface so that we can flip to a metro style to use as we do with our mobiles and tablets but let us use our desktop as a desktop
I really don’t like what I’m hearing about Update 1 booting straight to desktop. This is just them going backwards. How are you promoting the new direction you think the OS should go by making it the secondary option, but I do think the power button and the “This PC” should have been default things in Windows 8 from beginning. Maybe a PC settings and the All Apps link as well. One thing that probably bothered some people is that things you normally see as soon as you open the start menu or when the system boots up are not on the start screen. I still don’t think the average person who has not used Windows 8 before would think to click on their username to log off though
Took them a while to understand that metro really, really didn’t suit a lot of users – despite the fanboys enthusiasm!
Microsoft’s marketing department and attitude to users leaves a lot to be desired and has cost the company a lot of money. And it’s only the financial cost to Microsoft that has driven the change – NOT the ‘listening to people’ that some folk seem to believe!
Not a fan of this at all. At least now it will give the so-called tech experts some new copy. I can’t wait for the ‘how to modernize your Win8 machine in a few simple clicks’ articles that will be coming out shortly, then all the ‘experts’ can pat themselves on their backs and congratulate themselves for the awesome hack they just found.
Seriously, to satisfy the luddites all MS has to do is have one page during Windows 8 installation where they ask you to choose between “Recommended Settings for PCs” or “Recommended Settings for Tablets”. The first would enable boot to desktop and set IE to always use the desktop version. File types like pictures, music etc. would be linked to photo gallery and WMP etc. The second setting would disable boot to desktop, link the file types to the apps, make the Metro IE default and enable DPI scaling. Yes , there are a tonne more settings to enable/disable for each, but I hope you get the drift. Simple, elegant and should shut everybody up (about this complete on-issue anyway).
Wow.
Maybe this time they might listen to the people who have been right all along on this issue, ie the testers? Unless they start doing this on a regular basis, then they are going to become a second rate computer company and even APPLE will bypass them and APPLE only has at best 8% of the market.
Really a step backwards if this is true, I hope it’s just a glitch in the unfinished release. All the people I know who had concerns with desktop vs. modern UI changed their minds after a few days of actually using the OS for real and not just to see how it looks like
Maybe Microsoft should do a “Windows K12” version that doesn’t include the Metro desktop at all and stick to the desktop ala Windows 7, but includes Metro apps floating on the desktop as mentioned here and elsewhere? Set hooks to Search (Bing) to all installed programs and apps (search for files, etc … in context with the window currently in focus).
