The Finnish telecom giant begins the global deployment of the Portico update to the Windows Phone 8 platform starting today. Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 smartphones are slated to get the firmware update.

The company announced today that it will begin global deployment of the new software to devices all over the world. Firmware update to both these devices already in the United States and Canada already began a little while back, and now users in other countries can join in the fun as well.

Users can get the new software release, which is being pushed to both smartphones over-the-air, and Nokia expects the process to take around two months.

The company made the announcement on the Nokia Support website:

“A Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 8 software update providing performance enhancements for the Nokia Lumia 820 and Nokia Lumia 920 has started rolling out over the air.

Delivery will continue in a phased manner over the coming weeks and is expected to be complete by mid-March. You will receive a notification on your phone when the update is available for you to download.”

As is usually the case with updates of these sorts, Portico will receive a staged rollout — meaning not everyone will be receiving the update at once. Some will have to wait a while it seems.

For the uninitiated, Windows Phone 8 Portico brings various enhancements to devices, including an improved Internet Explorer experience and better messaging features.

Nokia said that Lumia smartphones are also set to get imaging performance improvements and better battery management along with more efficient and reliable Bluetooth connectivity. An improved start-up sequence also makes the cut, among other things.
