Windows RT has been under fire from a number of circles recently, though Microsoft’s platform for ARM devices also enjoys the company of friends, with some hardware vendors backing it up to come good.
And this is, in many ways, understandable — it has been less than a year since Windows RT saw daylight.
But what matters the most is that Microsoft still bets big on the platform, and has on more than one occasion reiterated its belief in Windows RT. Qualcomm, another ARM manufacturer recently jumped into the fray saying it is excited about the future of Windows RT.
And now these statements are echoed by NVIDIA. The hardware maker has said that the platform is where things are going, meaning it is ready for the future.
The vice president of computing products at NVIDIA, Rene Hass talking to Computerworld said that his company is very invested and very committed to Windows RT, while also adding that the platform has a bright future ahead of it.
Haas emphasized that Windows RT machines tend to have longer battery lives and smaller form factors than actual Windows 8 tablets. The executive also revealed that the upcoming Tegra 4 chips will feature in a number of Windows RT tablets in the very near future.
Backing and beliefs withstanding, even the hardware vendors will find it hard to deny that ARM based hardware will soon have some tough competition from both Intel and AMD this year.
Intel in particular has been hyping up the low power consumption of its Haswell CPUs, which means increased battery life for regular Windows 8 tablets. While at the same time, the company’s Bay Trail (Atom) platform is also in line to receive a number of improvements and enhancements.
I will only buy winRT if it provides hand writing Chinese characters as I need to do web search in Chinese. That’s one of the reasons I choose iPad instead of Surface RT last Christmas.
