Preview Version Of Oracle Software Now Available On Windows Azure

Those of you keeping an eye on the cloud side of Microsoft’s enterprise business may be aware that Redmond and Oracle recently entered into a corporate partnership.

And the fruits of this joint venture are now (almost) ripe for picking.

Microsoft and Oracle first announced this partnership back in June, and starting today, September 24, Redmond has made available a preview version of the virtual machine (VMs) images running oracle software on Windows Azure.

As promised, the most popular Oracle software is now ready and raring for a preview run, including the company’s database, WebLogic Server and Java Development Kit.

Microsoft made the announcement on in a blog post on TechNet saying:

“Building on our longstanding relationship, customers using Java, Oracle WebLogic Server, and Oracle Database will now have the flexibility to run that software on Windows Azure and Windows Hyper-V. Also, ISVs who build and sell applications based on Java and Oracle will have the flexibility and choice to run their applications and services in Windows Azure – enabling the enterprise adoption of cloud-based ISV solutions built with Oracle technologies.”

Both companies have also announced plans to provide VMs not just for Windows Azure, but also on Windows Server via Hyper-V. But this is set for a later date, as today’s preview release seems to be exclusive to Windows Azure.

Customers can try out this new offering by either using their own license, or make use of a license provided by Oracle for its database and WebLogic Server.

Those who bring their own Oracle license will be eligible for direct support from Oracle on the company’s software on Windows Azure and Windows Server Hyper-V. Those using the license included version will find out which company will offer support closer to general availability.

And although the general availability date has not been publicly announced, this is but the first step of a very significant partnership between these two titanic rivals of enterprise and cloud solutions.
