Shared Clipboard In Windows Server 2012 R2 Already Winning Plaudits

The upcoming Windows Server 2012 R2 may already have a fair few nifty features, but when it comes to killer ones, there are none better than its clipboard functionality that allows cut and paste between virtual machines.

Up until now good old FTP was the easiest way to copy files (even something as simple as text) between two or more virtual machines in a Windows environment.

Say goodbye to this cumbersome practice with Windows Server 2012 R2 — the latest version of the server operating platform comes with a shared clipboard that allows the copying of not just text but also files between VMs.

They did say the biggest joys in life lie in the smallest of things!

The folks over at The Register have the full story straight from the land down under. Microsoft recently held its TechEd conference in Australia and the announcement of this feature made the house go wild:

“If you want to see a TechEd audience break into spontaneous applause – and here I am one-hundred-percent serious – give them something that they really care about. Like a shared clipboard. The people running virtual servers really did interrupt Benjamin Armstrong, Microsoft Hyper-V program manager, to applaud the simple act of being able to cut and paste text or files between VMs.”

The limit is still 64 virtual CPUs, but the addition of Remote Direct Memory Access offers an immense boost in speed to machines and for carrying out live migrations.

Windows Server 2012 R2 is on track for release on October 18, along with Windows 8.1.
