post on the official blog confirms, SkyDrive will henceforth be known as OneDrive. Other than that, not much is changing. The company says that deciding on this new name was not the easiest thing in the world. In the words of Ryan Gavin, general manager for consumer apps and services:

“Of course, changing the name of a product as loved as SkyDrive wasn’t easy. We believe the new OneDrive name conveys the value we can deliver for you and best represents our vision for the future. We are excited about what is to come, and can’t wait to share more.”
Ultimately, after considering a variety of names, they decided on OneDrive, as they want it to become the one place where users store their most important stuff:
“One place for all your photos and videos. One place for all of your documents. One place that is seamlessly connected across all devices you use.”
Truth be told, the name is not exactly groundbreaking or something out of the ordinary — which is a good thing. It has been brought up by users on online forums before, and just like SkyDrive, has that special flow that should help with popularization. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4NsPPUDjyU The new name is being rolled out everywhere as of this writing, and the cloud storage service will, from now on, operate as OneDrive and OneDrive for Business. What do you guys and gals think about it? Nifty and neat, or normal and natural? Do tell.]]>

  • Although I thought “SkyDrive” was most fitting, after watching the video (which by the way was nicely done) “OneDrive” makes a nice fit too…Thanks Fahad

    • You’re welcome! 😀
And yeah, I agree, this was the most fitting
choice. As simple as SkyDrive, while at the same time being a bit more
coherent, as far as names go. Plus, at least they did not call it
Windows Drive. That would have been a catastrophe.

  • What’s in a name? OneDrive isn’t bad though. Falls in line with OneNote and makes me wonder if they shouldn’t have named Bing, OneSearch too.

    OneOffice? Why not?
    OneMail? I’m likin’ it!
    OneSearch? Now you’re talkin’!
And for Bing maps, how about OneDirection…….?
