Surface Book 2 Suffers From Battery Drain, Microsoft Admits

The recently released Surface Book 2 may be a monster when it comes to performance, but even monsters have their issues. And one such problem is now official.

As in, Microsoft has confirmed it.

According to this report, the Surface Book 2 has a power problem.

In that when playing games in the highest settings, when every little bit of performance from the hardware is squeezed, the battery percentage keeps decreasing — even when a user has connected a charger.

Yes, the ‘Better Performance’ and ‘Best Battery’ settings in Windows 10 were specifically implemented to deal with this issue, and they throttle the NVIDIA graphics card to the point where the battery drain is no longer experienced.

And although users were the first to note this problem, Microsoft has also chimed in on this.

According to a company spokesperson, full drain will never occur:

“Surface Book 2 was designed to deliver unmatched power and performance for anyone who needs a powerful machine to work and create, making it a great option for STEM professionals (designers, developers, engineers)

The Surface Book 2 Power Mode Slider is provided as a means to give the user control over the range of performance and battery life. In some intense, prolonged gaming scenarios with Power Mode Slider set to ‘best performance’ the battery may discharge while connected to the power supply provided in-box with Surface Book 2. However, through power management design, the battery will never drain entirely, ensuring that users are able to keep working, creating or gaming.”

As you can see, Microsoft says nothing about a potential fix for this issue, or a firmware update that deals with this problem.

Meaning, the power settings are likely the only ways to prevent battery drain when in the maximum performance mode. In other words, graphics could very well be impacted in some games, making the Surface Book 2 less than ideal for such demanding tasks.
