Verge Forums called Sputnik 8 put together a really great series of Windows Desktop concepts that are VERY impressive. His words..
This is a desktop concept that I’ve recently put together for fun. I thought I’d post a few screens to see what people here think. The screens include variations of explorer, ie (with a quick redesign of windows.com and bing), media center/player, and skype. Note that I didn’t aim for the design to be completely consistent with what MS calls ‘metro’ (for instance, I specifically didn’t want loops around icons, among other things). Anyway, click on the images to see the full versions. The images are gorgeous and clean and show a possible direction that the Windows 8 Desktop could have gone in. He mixes Metro concepts with very clean design to make a sexy hybrid desktop. Kind of makes you wonder if the upcoming Windows 8 release will be as clean and inspiring? Check out the images below.. Well, you seem to forget that a significant share of Windows users are disturbed by even the change from Windows Vista to Windows 7. I think that Microsoft will already have a hard time to convince people to accept the Metro Start Screen. It could be even more risky to them to push a too radically different desktop too.
This said i agree that it is a bit disapointing to see that the desktop has not evovled significantly more. I would have liked the native support of virtual desktops (not from some third party utilities) and a 3D desktop for the right hardware. Moreover, i do not like too flat U.I as i find them a bit ugly and unappealing.
Think that 100% spot on. Its such a huge change there must be some familiarity with previous versions.
Indeed. Sometime technophiles forget not everyone can catch up as easily as them to paradigm shift. The new start screen is already an almost too big paradigm shift for many people, hence the desktop should stay as familiar as possible to them. I hope also that Microsoft has found a more efficient way to deal with the new start screen and Metro apps for people with big screen and/or multiple monitors.
If not as Windows 8, this could be pushed to some open source OS (cough Linux cough)… Talk to those people. They did introduce Unity, but a change like this is always welcome. This is a very good example of a content-centric interface.
I like Metro UI far better than this…
dnt understand whats

Clearly the user has done a great job. but Windows is not an “application” its an Operating System. this concept UI wont fit Windows 8.
I don’t see anything embarrassing about it.
Yup, its too late now…they should have asked Sputnik to develop for them. This is much better than what Im using in Windows 8. They way it should have been. At least EXPLORER should have been a metro styled app in addition to desktop app. crazy microsoft
I really like it.. It feels new and inspiring..
