Now, I could go into detail about how badly it was written, how misleading it was, how wrong it was  but I won’t. I won’t because anyone in tech who reads that article will instantly recognize all those things. In addition, Ed Bott wrote a good rejoinder here so no need. Needless to say, the article was pretty weak. So surprise surprise, this afternoon, look what I saw: [caption id="attachment_7203" align="alignnone" width="590"] Fox News Windows 8 number 2[/caption] Hmm. Let’s take a look at this article and see what they point out. The three reasons they cite are:
Ridiculous. I usually have the patience to break these down in detail but not today. I’ll be brief.Compatibility Headaches
First there are the usual complaints about compatibility issues. One striking piece of news: The tablet-style version of Windows 8 (called Metro) is going to pull a Steve Jobs and stubbornly refuse to work with Adobe’s Flash. Yes, the dominant way that consumers watch videos on the Internet will not function in the glitzy version Windows 8. It will work in a “classic” desktop version of Windows 8, but who wants that old software on their shiny new Windows tablet? Furthermore, you won’t be able to get any old application to work with the Metro version of Windows 8. Shunning the one feature that helped make Windows a near monopoly — just about every program worth having worked on it — Microsoft will switch to a gated community approach like that of Apple. Want a new app for your Windows Metro tablet? You’ll only be able to purchase it through the Microsoft Store. (We’ll see how well that model works against the iPad.)A Whole New World
Annoying as these problems may be — and things may change before the final version is released — the biggest problem for Windows 8 is simply that the world may have passed it by. The last version of Windows was released in 2009. Since then, the iPad was introduced, TVs connected to the Internet have become commonplace, and smart phones have become the computers we use most. Not to mention the fact that more people have become accustomed to using their game consoles as Web browsers. Even the cybercriminals and hackers have begun turning away from desktop computers and Windows and begun to focus more on infecting Web sites and smartphones.Microsoft’s Lost Clout
Back in the day, just the mere whiff of a rumor that Microsoft was going to release a new version of its OS would freeze the market. Companies would halt IT purchases. Consumers would stop upgrading or buying new applications. No one would buy hardware. All for fear that whatever was purchased today, wouldn’t work with the new version of Windows tomorrow. But we’re not in a holding pattern any more.
- Yes, Flash may not make the cut – after Apple’s discipline on the issue, nobody really cares.
- Your windows 7 apps will work in classic Windows 8 desktop mode. Metro is an option (or the desktop is an option depending how you look at it).
- How do you respond to the “A whole new world” paragraph? It’s asinine. Of course things have changed – so?
- Microsoft’s lost clout? —????
- Not very capable technology writing
- Inherent anti-Microsoft bias
- Both of the above

F— Fox News!
Because Faux Noise and it’s audience doesn’t like anything it can’t understand by reading it on the back of a cereal box. Which is most science and technology. But mostly because Gates may have donated to some liberal causes.
please see my reply above!!
Win 8 sucks!
List the reasons for your moronic post.
Win8 works great for me.
for me too. actually I’m impressed. it is developer preview but works great.
it recognized all the drivers and works faster than my windows 7.Â
it has a few bugs , but hey this is developer preview.Â
About Microsoft Windows 8……I don’t have it on my computer yet, but plan to as soon as I recover from surgery…..and feel like getting on my computer for awhile…..so I can get the updates and whatever else I might need to do in order to change from Windows Vista to Windows 8. It seems Microsoft has a wonderful program here…..I hope it goes well regardless of bad publicity. I have always trusted Microsoft’s software and shall continue to do so! Thank for allowing me to write this.

I still hate Microsoft for what they did to the world on Vista, the biggest piece of crap ever drug up. Their solution for me who had a version of Vista that would never update a single time was buy a copy of Windows 7. Â
I have the windows 8 developers preview and so far they work great with all of my programs and applications. I am not sure what FOX is talking about but I like Windows 8 although it takes getting used to. It happens with everything new. I remember when they came up with Microsoft Office 2007 and the ribbons. I was so confused and lost…but I would never want to go buck now that I know how to find everything on the ribbon.
windows 8 is awesome as it is much faster than xp and windows7 combined and has superfast boot technology.it also consumes very less resources and give more battery life as compared to windows 7 thats why you can call windows 8 as the best upcoming version of windows ever.
cuz they are idiots, everybody knows which the windows 8 will be a sucess, I have a PC with 512mb of RAM with windows developer preview, it can boot in 5 seconds
sorry, im newbie in english, im brazilian =S
Your doing pretty good. Keep it up! I’m learning German 😀 Ich leibe Windows 8!
Ich liebe* Windows 8. You made a spelling mistake its liebe not leibe. Good effort though keep it up ;).
haha Thanks!
Is Fox
news a real TV channel. I just thought it was a comic parody used to highlight
media and political nonsense in Jon Stewarts Dailyshow.
I don’t know if you could really call it a news Chanel, it’s more of a brain-dead propaganda Chanel.Â
Speaking of brain dead, learn to spell. You and Onoura probably get your news exclusively through MSNBC, now that’s a real news channel *sarc.Â
Is that tiger blood in your veins?
You should try to watch it at least once, you may learn something
They are a bunch of right wing hypcrites at Faux News and their answer to anything that requires thought and actual knowledge is “NO NO NO”. I wouldn’t give them a second thought about what the heck they think about anything because it’s definitely always suspect. IMHO.
I totally agree with this article,m but you are a joke!! I have never found a liberal who can carry on a civil debate about politics! You are just start the name calling as soon as your arguments are challenged. I have also never met a liberal who has an original thought that can back it up all you do is parrot what you are told to say!!!! I also find it funny how you always need to tell conservatives we are dumb and you are so smart, my experience is that if someone has to tell you how smart they are they usually are not very smart! One last thing how smart can you be if you cannot complete a sentence on your own with out the use of a teleprompter?
Oh piss off, this is a tech article – go edit Conservapedia or something with your friends if you still lust for a political flame war.
You are ANAL RETENTIVE
roland i dont think it is going to be all you think it is. the average purson wil hate it it is to hard to work with.
clearly, they are foxed by MS, they have been asimilated into the ipad colllective and have lost the ability to think indendantly.
Yes Win8 has work to do, to get MS back to where they werem but thye can do it, Win7 is an excellent O/S.
they do need to major league promo windows phones though, the public awareness of them is shockingly low.
Vodafoen and O2 websites need to have Windows phones as a search option. Currently, isdt android, blackberry, iphone and smartphone.
we need a massive push on windows phones !
sorry about the spelling, too much rushing!
They are a bunch of right wing hypcrites at Faux News and their answer to anything that requires thought and actual knowledge is “NO NO NO”. I wouldn’t give them a second thought about what the heck they think about anything because it’s definitely always suspect…@seknowit, I just got a $829.99 iPad2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HDTV for only $251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prices at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HDTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for. I use http://bit.ly/oLF4bb
First off I would like to say that people can not spell (including me). next i want to say that windows 8 is being made for touch screen. As of right now i dont think that windows 8 is all that amazing (since i dont have a touch screen and i probably dont know all of the new features with the exception of redesign). MS is doing the same thing with xbox 360 with kinect. I am curious how MS is going to appeal to the non touch screen users like me. I also can not wait for the Beta to come out so i can give some feedback.
Oh and also just wanted to say that fox news is stupid for not doing research and not writing in any particular understandable way. FOX NEWS FAILS!!!
lol I cannot believe how many people made comments about spelling on this thread, it seems people talk more about their spelling than the actual article.
Keep hearing and reading different articlea. My main question. Is there still going to be desktop computers?
Windows 8 is little hard to navigate at the beginning but so is every new version of any OS. Every OS is going radical change nowadays so allow MS to take one more year and see what we might get in return.
Whatever Fox tells me to buy, I won’t. I mean, these guys have sold two wars to the American people (and to the Western world too) in the las decade and their return policy sucks big time. So if they say that W8 is bad, I take it the other way around.
Not only did they sell us two wars, but they also sold us a second term of the worst president in our history, GWB; I could have sworn the Bush’s had bought FN!!!
They do seem to have no common sense at all.
I cannot see bashing a product that is not out in the market yet, especially when it’s called Developers Preview!!
they got nothing there.Â
they can not happy with us. But windows brings us to the future.
well theres only one thing you can say to the article is for them to stop judging things and allow the people who are going to use be the judges cause all there doing is saying to people were telling you its rubbish so take our word for it and dont try for yourself whatever happened to peoples freedom to speak for themselves ive tried it so far and its ok theyve made a few leaps so far and ive seen and tested most of the operating systems and there are some big leaps forward with this so far
Every other windows OS is crap. I will not buy it. The next one I will problably get.
A shortsighted Fox story….or written by some one with a lot of Apple/Google shares in his portfolio.
People still watch fox? Lol. I stopped caring what they had to say along time ago. Hell why not let Charlie Sheen do the report on Windows 8. At least I’ll be entertained while I’m being fed bullshit.
Whilst I do agree that Fox New’s isnt very good, and that this article reads like it was written by a monkey in a zoo, I cant loose the feeling that Microsoft just isnt the innovative company it used to be. Before everyone would look at Microsoft for innovation and see what will be next, that’s entirely shifted to apple. They are now more powerful at controlling the market and directing it. I feel that although Windows 8 is nice and looks promising, it lacks on innovation. The only new major new feature is the Metro UI and a few other things, they are not anything that could not have been put onto Windows 7 as updates or optional extras. What Microsoft needs is a product which will revolutionize the way we use desktop computers. They have to become leaders and not continue to be a technological follower. So common Microsoft, Windows 8 is nice, but I want something that’s going to make my head spin!
I haven’t watched fox news in years but I also don’t watch MSNBC either. My main gripe with Microsoft is there inability to compete. Example, I just bought my first smartphone with an Android operating system and I find I really don’t miss Microsoft products at all. I wanted a windows phone originally but the lowest cost version was over $100.00. My android phone, $20.00! I’ve now switched everything over to Google but I’m still able to use IE8 and other Microsoft programs as needed. This is from someone that wanted to use MS Live and MS Office 7 together. I think all that Fox was trying to say is that Windows 8 will probably not be a must have upgrade. It makes me sick that Microsoft has let Apple and Google kick their butts in so many ways.
Onuora,
I have to question your interppretation of a Fox News because i have seen the articals and they are reprints of Cnet and Windows Secrets by they must get their tech information from other sources . And most of what i have seen that negative towarts Windows 8 are from the LA Times where the last article you listed originated .
I have been watching the Windows 8 developers conforence you sent and I can’t see where you could be possibly treaten by that news organization .
Are you being politically bias ? Maybe this is the fear the White House and the liberal establishment are projectig that you are getting a false expectation of Fox where if this was the case you should have that expectation from MSNBC, CNN and HNN the left of Fox because they have printed these same articles on there sites . I gheck all the magor cable news web sites tech section and cnet for reviews and information on Windows 8 .
I would like more to know when When Windows 8 beta will be released .
Alvin ClemonsÂ
oh…. well that’s fox news, no need to explain more.
Fox seems to have issue, and not only with Microsoft. The truth of the matter is desktops will never die even if portables are becoming more popular, there is just still way to much that cannot be achieved with the computing power of modern hand held devices at this time. Microsoft has also, and in spite of its failings, built up a long list of loyal users, who for the most part will stick with the brand they know, love and trust. Current user of windows 7 will also automatically look to windows 8 as an improvement to a system they have come to love and respect, The biggest area of lost sales can therefor be attributed to younger users who are new consumers and who will ultimately make a lifelong choice based on their personal experiences with different systems and who will settle on the system best suited to their needs, in other words those that choose not to use Windows are will be the same type of person who in the past bypassed Microsoft for other marketed products anyway.
Nobody cares what those asses at faux news say…they don’t count for anything.
it will pass , because windows 8 is turning out to be as good as windows 98 was. if they keep on the right trek.
Face it, without offending everybody
here please… Your words come out as biased as FOX news… Second, I’m running
the developer copy, and after disabling the ridiculous Metro interface that
essentially takes you out of “Windows”, it’s a mirror copy of Windows
7 with square window edges like 95… The point is thus far, this offers
nothing to corporate America that their barely (maybe) just established error
free and feature packed Windows 7 PC’s don’t… Please, I am not Microsoft
bashing, for a small tablet or smart phone this is great, and practically a
necessity… However, for the bulk of corporate Americas PC’s and Laptops,
quite a different story… And as for the smaller companies, unless purchasing new
machines (which won’t happen if already as new as Windows 7) clearly aren’t buying
Windows 8… Plain and simple… Thanks… 🙂
Not offended at all
Do you remember what Microsoft said about Windows ME and Vista??? I keep informed but wait to see the “real” outcome. I am tired of paying to be a beta tester :o)
I don’t think Fox gets anything from Microsoft for their reporting, do you?
thanks
Hang On,- Microsoft Screwed everbody over with Windows Vista. it was a good looking piece of  sheit and BING then came Windows 7 perfectly working ( And i dont really care where you stole the code) I just want my Windows to work Perfectly.
Windows 8 hmmm,- its Windows 7 in another wrapping, congrats with the Cloud apps, but Google already did that, and honestly i dont really want my computer to look like a giant Smartphone.
So i will definently not turn my windows 7 in to a layercake.
KC.
You’re full of shit. Banning Flash, the most advanced and ubiquitous high-performance graphics and scripting platform for the web, forcing us to return to slow-ass JavaScript and do-nothing canvas, was a PERMANENT turn-off to Apple products for me and many others. Until Apple supports Flash again, I will never own an iOS device. Windows 8 may work well on a touch screen device with a dedicated windows/home button, but I can’t even find a way to get out of the control panel without using the keyboard’s window button or clicking the classing control panel option to get a windowed interface. The new start menu overwhelms the screen in an overtly opaque way, and likewise, the full-screen apps are a step backwards about a decade, because they completely ruin the idea of multitasking; I mean for fuck’s sake, the OS is called WINDOWS for a reason…
Much like ‘Friday’, I thought it was a joke until halfway through.. and then I was like.. “Oh… They’re serious..”
well Fox News should stick to we report you decide. Dont worry when Windows 8 sells bigger than the Ipad they will come around.
