It just had to be! Microsoft is working on refreshing pretty much all key areas of the OS in Windows 11, and the bundled apps remain the most crucial.

We have been getting hints that the app basket in Windows 11 is getting refreshed with new versions of the popular applications. From an updated File Explorer to redone Paint and a revitalized Photos app, there’s a lot in the oven here.

And on a seemingly ordinary Wednesday, Panos Panay dropped a reveal of another one.

The Chief Product Officer at Microsoft released the first look at the new Snipping Tool in Windows 11 that not only packs in the snipping utilities that we know and love, but also rounded edges that have now become a trademark feature of the new OS.

As the video above shows, the experience is very much similar to what is already available on Windows machines.

In that, you can snip a part of your screen, scribble notes or drawings on it, and do a bunch of different things with it, before saving it as an image and sharing it wherever you want. Simple enough features, but highly useful ones.

Users will also be able to copy and paste snips directly into a folder in File Explorer, though this is a feature that could arrive at a later date.

Snip & Sketch, meanwhile, is losing its title.

Redmond had already confirmed that instead of retiring the legacy snipping toolset, it is merging Snipping Tool and Snip & Sketch together into this new app that will simply be called Snipping Tool. Simplification is the name of the game here, clearly.

As Panay said, this new tool will soon be available to Windows Insiders for testing, likely in the next build that gets released this week.
