I knew it! Nothing like this happens out of the blue. The newly released Windows 11 2022 Update has been causing a few issues here and there, with one particular bug being rather widespread.

The slow file copy problem has been plaguing many folks.

Microsoft confirmed this niggle that led to massive slowdowns in copy speeds of large files when done remotely on a Windows 11 22H2 system. The software titan said that it observed around 40% lower speeds being witnessed.

However, users are reporting even worse performance hits due to this bug.

Some are even claiming dips of up to 100%, as strange as it sounds:

“I would just want to correct 40% slower statement from Ned, im seeing way over 100% difference on setups like 10gb NICs (5gb/s vs 2gb/s) difference, or on SMB multi channel setups with multiple gigabit NICs.”

How that is possible is anyone’s guess, but it is clear that something very sinister is at play here that tanks the throughput to this degree.

And while the initial impression was the that issue affected the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol mainly, Ned Pyle from Microsoft has confirmed that their initial suspicion was way off. Apparently, the problem exists somewhere else.

His words:

“I can’t share too many details yet, but we know exactly where it is getting slower in Kernel, nothing to do with SMB or compression.”

Gulp!

A kernel issue, eh?

Nevertheless, Microsoft has provided a detailed workaround for users struggling with this problem. You can follow that to get some breathing space while the company works to finally nail this issue right in the source—wherever that is.

The software titan has confirmed that it is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.
