Windows 8.1 App Watch: Bing Maps Preview

When it comes to Windows apps, Google is playing hard to catch. The search engine giant clearly has no intention (at least right now) to launch Metro versions of its apps and services.

And this means Microsoft has to look into its own backyard.

This is exactly what the software titan has done, actually. Bing Maps Preview is a version of Microsoft’s maps service that works in the Modern UI environment and brings the world to users — or more like some 70 plus cities complete in 3D.

The official description reads:

“Featuring stunning 3D world and city views, the Bing Maps Preview app puts you at the center of a smart, personalized experience that saves you time and helps you get things done. It’s Personal. Make your Windows 8.1 device smarter with personal information and insights where and when you need them.”

You can view street-level panoramas, load high-resolution 3D imagery of the locations, check traffic conditions and receive personalized recommendations for local restaurants and businesses without leaving the Metro UI.

The free app comes with support for both desktops and tablets, including ARM based ones and is exclusive to Windows 8.1, though apparently it is not yet available in all markets right now.
