Windows 8 Poll – Moment of Truth – Would you pay full upgrade price for Windows 8?

OK, so the fun and games are ALMOST over.

Microsoft recently announced that their severely discounted upgrade pricing will come to an end in January.

After January 31st of 2013, Windows 8 Pro will cost $199.99 and the Windows 8 “Core” Upgrade will be $129.99.

My (obvious) question is would you pay those prices to upgrade your PC to Windows 8?

Use the poll below and then use the comments to fully explain.

Thanks!

  • Are you fucking kidding me? For this contrived crap? No way buddy – I’ll get a crack for it online or not get it at all.

    • It’s just a marketing strategy to urge people to upgrade fast instead of delay it for years. After that, I doubt they would expect people to upgrade with that price. Instead, they expect people to buy new system instead of upgrading their old one.

  • I only upgraded cause it was so cheap,100% I wouldn’t have otherwise,I would have stuck with 7.I immediately bought start8 for mine 1st day.It does run better overall.

  • My reason to say no is because when I built my system, I installed Windows 8 even before it became the beta version and liked it enough to pay the discounted price to keep it. I do have a Windows 7 machine too, but until 7 stops being supported, I don’t see a need to change it. I even still have a very good laptop running Vista, and after the last couple years of upgrades, Vista has been quite stable and satisfactory, so only when it loses support will I upgrade. Why change something that works fine as it is?
This price is a little steep after I heard that 9 will cost little or nothing. Hmmmm, does anyone believe that? Anyway, I think the next time I pay full price for an OS, it will be the next time I build a Windows rig, and it’s likely to be when 9 comes out.

    • Win9 may cost less but it will be subscription based and so you will pay more eventually. There is no free lunch in this world.

      WillyThePooh January 23, 2013 6:09 am Reply
  • I have already purchased the upgrade which is reasonable at the current price, there is no way upgrading from Windows 7 makes sense at a price of $130 or $200 dollars. Microsoft must take the low demand for the discounted price upgrade and change its pricing policy.

  • Nope. I won’t even pay the $14.99 upgrade fee. Windows 8 can burn.

  • Is it worth it NO, I’ve had Windows 8 for 3 months. Its not getting any better as a matter of fact its getting worse, its starting to slow down, I’ve never had a virus or any kind of spam on my system until I installed Windows 8. Now I’m getting this crap almost daily, Good Job Microsoft. I’ll be uninstalling on the weekend and going back to Windows 7 64 bit. Oh and I want my money back, like that’s going to happen…..

    WOTplayer001 January 22, 2013 10:13 am Reply
    • Getting virus or spam has nothing to do with Win8. You will still get it even if you are using Win7. It slows down because of virus. Your bad luck.

      WillyThePooh January 23, 2013 6:55 am Reply
      • Virus! no I don’t think so, I’ve never had one.

  • After 3 weeks of working with 8, learning, migrating my applications from Windows 7 and XP and needing to completely “reinstall” due to a restart failure, I can honestly say I’m a little disappointed in 8. I have also encountered several instances where a particular function would not work until I performed a restart and tried it again. Windows 8 growing pains???

  • I voted no because I can tell you I am still discovering things about 8 I do not like. The way mail is delivered is awful. I hate the way it is already open. Inviting too many problems and what is with all that crap mail coming through??? I have never had this before. Get on the ball people. I also miss the sweep and block option in 7. I had no crap there like I do here. I mostly use the desktop as I can tell where everything went. IE is S L O W I have core i7 with 10 GB ram and I wait forever!! What is up with that? 7 was way better. I use my laptop more than the brand new fancy desktop. So after careful consideration I think I will by pass the cheap offer for the 8 on laptop what is suppose to be better in 9?? I haven’t heard or seen anything about that. Please inform.

    Paula January 22, 2013 10:23 am Reply
    • I don’t use the mail app as it doesn’t have junk mail filter. IE should not be slow unless you have a lot of add-on in your browser or your system has a screen logger. It’s actually faster than Win7. And my Win8 machine’s CPU is slower than my Win7 one. So your slow IE has nothing to do with Win8.

  • I also have the media center pro deal and the license key but it won’t install.. Can not get Firefox to install either. Can anyone help me out here?

    Paula January 22, 2013 10:25 am Reply
    • If you get license key and not install, then call MS support. If you can’t install firefox, then something is wrong with your system. Re-install it if you can. Win8 has a feature that you could bring it back to day one(I.e. factory default).

But truth is, no shock on it as it has been well known since 2012 that prices will change after a time!

  • I would not, those regular prices of Windows are simply ridiculous considering the incredibly low cost of Mac operating systems and the availability of Ubuntu. But I bought Windows 8 for my Lenovo tablet, I think that price should remain as an added incentive to those who may wish to use Windows 8 for a year or two before buying a Windows 8 tablet.

  • I had tried the beta for a few days and wasn’t impressed. When the discounted came available for $69.99 I gave it a full try – 2 months plus. I did find the system very fast compared to Windows 7 and below starting and finishing, but inbetween with no start menu Ifound it dificult. I admitt I am in my 82nd year and not as quick as I used to be but ??? I will try it again but I’m going to give it a few more months – there maybe some improvements that I’ll be able handle without the frustration I have run into.

    • Why do you need to pay $69.99 for the upgrade. That’s from Win8 to Win8 Pro upgrade. For Win7 to Win8 Pro, you only pay $39.99. If I got a Win8 machine, I won’t spend $70 to upgrade it to Win8 Pro.

  • To get the most out of Windows 8 you need a touch screen and me being a pc gamer I don’t use touch screen’s so NO.

  • if one didn’t take the upgrade offer… well i have nothing more to say. but if you want to upgrade then do it NOW for 30$. come on that is a complete OS with hundreds of thousands of code. if you think about the great amount of work which is beyond that… 30$ are nothing. if you thinkg about the great value you get for that… 30$ are nothing.
if you are not willing to upgrade… well thats you decision but maybe you should give win8 a Chance to Show what it can offer. and thats a lot more than win7 can. at least thats my opinion.

  • Upgrade at $200? No, if anyone was thinking to upgrade, they should have already bought the license. For Vista and older, this was a great value as the performance advantage is huge. For Windows 7, I would say this is a personal call.

If building a new computer, Windows 8 is flat out the best way to go and therefore a great value even at its new price.

I see the Windows 8 hate crowd is in full force today. Nothing anyone tells you will likely make you change your mind, but here goes anyway. After upgrading an old Vista laptop when Windows 8 first came on sale and later building a new computer from scratch with Windows 8. I will emphatically say, this is the best OS ever. I have no touch screen but I have a touch pad on my Windows 8 keyboard for the new machine only. I rarely use it. Mouse and keyboard alone work fine. I dont use the Windows 8 apps much but I do play with some of the games from time to time. Maybe I am just lucky but I have heard a lot of others that like it have had the same luck of no issues. Behind the scenes there are a lot of improvements over Windows 7. I would rather use Windows 8 any day.

    • When I install old x86 programs to my win8, it will ask if I want to run it in XP, Vista or Win7 compatibility mode. So instead of only one OS, I could actually run all my programs since XP. Its like having 4 OS in one plus the apps that you will not able to run in Win7.

  • No and no. Such prices are insane especially for an unfinished and rushed product such as Windows 8. Until Microsoft finish this O.S, i don’t see why anyone would pay such price for just an upgrade. It would be stupid and silly to ask Microsoft to sell Windows licence at a price as low as Mac OS X price, but there is certainly a way to sell Windows at much cheaper price. $50 for Windows 8 and $75 for Windows Pro both for up to 3 devices, would be reasonnable.
Btw, if Microsoft is serious about moving Windows from traditional P.C to devices, they should manage to update the built-in apps in a much quicker way. A monthly update of the so called apps would be really appreciated because several of the built-in apps litteraly suck.

    • OSX is not cheap. You even need to pay for a patch from 10.x to 10.8 while MS gives you free service patch. Wait until you find out how much you have to pay to upgrade OSX 10.x to 11.0, then you know the real price of OSX.

  • i have to agree with timteh quoting “No and no. Such prices are insane especially for an unfinished and rushed product such as Windows 8.” because there’s still more for this windows to come and more stuff to be added wether by stand alone downloads or an update, furthermore I can’t guarantee myself an “ok” regarding this window because since the day it was launched it was imperfect and still has issues and is still being mended although it was officially launched, hence why will i put money for something that was launched half complete, buy it and wait for the other half to be complete and buy that “half” again!

  • Windows 8 is the most disgusting operating system for a desktop computer I have seen. I would not use it if they gave it away for free. I don’t just dislike it, I hate it! I never actually hated an operating system from Microsoft before this. The main reason is that I have no choice. I want a desktop operating system for my desktop. Windows 8 looks OK for a touch device, but since I have no choice in my desktop OS I will not buy any Windows 8 device and I will advise all I know not to buy Windows 8 devices. Screw you Microsoft for trying to jam this abomination of an OS down everyone’s throat. I will defiantly give Linux a try.
