..therefore it is rumored to be on a different update cadence…also Windows 8 is rumored to be on a annual update cadence (pay $29 every year after the major release for basically a service pack and more features) This is just a rumor. Now this is the part where I should say that I don’t think this is true and that Microsoft would NEVER change the model of licensing Windows that radically. Not these days baby. So much has changed with Microsoft and Windows over the last 12 months that every potential twist and turn deserves some scrutiny. Stay tuned.]]>
So microsoft will now follow apple’s model? Great one ballmer!
It’s just a rumor for now…
Its more likely to become a subscription service I think. Correct me if I am wrong but I think that large parts of the code in office 2013 are actually streamed and not stored locally, so we could see the same happen there (btw. I don’t like office 2013).
Why don’t you like Office 2013? I’m curious…
well, I think it looks like its an app written for Windows 1.0. There is so much white background that it makes it hard to navigate. A good ui uses color and textures to create a natural point of reference (i.e. immediately know where the menu bar, settings etc. are). The UI just does not seem natural to use, or intuitive, and I find this very funny since the only significant change is the colour scheme. Aero was just becoming mature as a UI and looking really great and I don’t understand why it was abandoned. My problem is probably not so much with the applications themselves as it is with the UI. Yes windows has to change, but not like this. My first impression is, I would rather use something else. Within 5 minutes of opening it, I hated it. And this is coming from a long time advocate for Microsoft Office. Its not for me and I will stick with office 2010 until something better comes along, or just switch to google docs.
having said this, I will give it a try for a while to see If I change my mind.
A good UI just works regardless of visual fluff, as that’s some of the point of the metro design. Office 2013 focuses a lot on white space because that’s a part of the UI designed to differentiate the UI from the content. It’s clean and simple, simply put. But then again, using apple products makes you believe that visual fluff is the only way to go…
why do you assume I am an apple fanboy? The Metro UI is a mess! There is such thing as bad design, and metro is exactly that.
All the purpose of simplified UI is to save battery life and boot up fast. i.e. what the users main requests. As battery technology improves and users adapt to the look and feel of new Windows, then you will see fancier UI again but you will need to wait for Win9 or WinX.
The actual battery composition, hardware, and energy management of the hardware play much more of a role in battery life. Good chemistry can create incredible battery life, the actual software only has to be optimised with the hardware, which obviously cannot happen with SEO’s thus decreasing battery efficiency.
