Windows Gets New Critical Security Updates On Patch Tuesday

Microsoft has unleashed eight different security updates for August’s Patch Tuesday update cycle as it tries to fix a total of 23 vulnerabilities in Windows, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Exchange Server.

Three of these updates come with the rating of Critical and are aimed at fixing glitches, and the software titan recommends users — and particularly system administrators — to prioritize the installation of these new security updates.

Security bulletin MS13-060, for example fixes a privately reported vulnerability in the Unicode Scripts Processors in Windows. Microsoft detailed this as:

“The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user viewed a specially crafted document or webpage with an application that supports embedded OpenType fonts. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user.”

Security bulletin MS13-059 is another Critical fix that takes care of a flaw in Internet Explorer that could allow remote execution of code if a user visited a compromised website using an unpatched system.

And finally, the MS13-061 update has been designed to patch vulnerabilities in Microsoft Exchange Server that, once again, could allow remote code execution and enable an attacker to take control of a vulnerable machine.

The other five updates are rated as Important and are meant to fix flaws in veracious version of Windows, including Windows XP and the newly launched Windows 8.
