Windows Phone 8 GDR3 Release Notes Allegedly Leak, New Features Revealed

Windows Phone 8 GDR2 has recently started its slow rollout process, with smartphone owners around the world receiving update notifications for the new firmware version of Microsoft’s mobile platform.

But Microsoft has long been rumored to launch a new flavor of its mobile OS before the end of the year.

Known as Windows Phone 8 GDR3, this update is expected to bring support for new hardware (think quad-core processors and 1080p display resolution). Now some release notes for this upcoming update have emerged online, allegedly revealing what appears to be a list of changes.

A Reddit user has posted the release notes for Windows Phone 8 GDR3, and on first look it seems that this will in fact be a minor upgrade — despite the fact that it brings support for better hardware.

These new capabilities are actually said to allow the platform to power larger smartphones and phablets, which a couple of Windows Phone partners (Nokia the prime amongst them) are said to be working on.

WMPowerUser notes that Joe Belfiore of Microsoft has already confirmed that the technology titan was looking to expanding its support for new hardware for the Windows Phone 8 platform — though no specifics had been provided up until now, at least officially.

Along with support for new SoCs and 1080p displays, other important changes include Orientation Lock, Driver Mode (that will automatically kick on once Bluetooth is connected) and the ability to have 3 medium sized tiles in a row.

The Verge has also chipped in with details saying that Microsoft is also considering the option to sync text messages with the desktop and the web in GDR3. Changes to the network logos may also be included in this new version.
