It took a long time coming, but Finnish telecommunication titan Nokia finally brought its 41MP PureView technology to the Windows Phone platform. The company made official the long rumored Lumia 1020 smartphone at an event in New York.
The new Windows Phone 8 device is packing a 41 megapixel illuminated sensor at the back, which is the largest in any mobile phone currently available on the market.
It had previously been detailed in leaked bits, and photos of press renders surfaced a couple of days ago, and the smartphone comes with almost all the features and hardware specifications that were rumored.
The Lumia 1020 will hit store shelves with a 4.5 inch PureMotion HD+ AMOLED display, which will be powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor — the same chip that powered the Lumia 920 and Lumia 925 before it.
But unlike these two previous flagships, this new smartphone lands on the market with 2GB of RAM, twice the memory of previous models, while 32GB of internal memory, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, and a GPS receiver round up the specifications.
Remarkably, despite the large camera sensors on the back, the smartphone is only 10.4mm think (or thin, whatever have you), and weighs just 158 grams.
Impressive processing prowess aside, the main selling point of the Nokia Lumia 1020 remains the 41 megapixel photo snapper on the back. The camera comes with Optical Image Stabilization and the abilities to adjust everything — from flash, focus and ISO to white balance, exposure and shutter speed.
As previously detailed, the camera saves two images of snapped photos, one at 38MP and the other at 5MP. It can also record videos at 1080p resolution with 4x zoom, and at 720p resolution with 6x zoom.
The exclusive Nokia Pro Camera app bundled with the smartphone packs a variety of advanced features that enhance the imagine capabilities and photography experience of the handset.
The Nokia Lumia 1020 is set to land on store shelves in the United States, exclusively at AT&T on July 26 in an array of colors — matte black, white and yellow. Contract pricing starts at $299.99 with a two-year agreement, and the carrier announced that preordering begins on July 16.
