Nokia May Not Launch A 5-Inch Lumia Device This Year

Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system is finally gathering up some momentum, with several successful smartphones already on the market, and other set for release this year.

Nokia has been one of success stories with the mobile OS, with hits like Lumia 920 and 820.

Industry insiders, however, believe that while the Finnish mobile phone maker will out a few new models in the coming months, it may not launch a smartphone with 5-inch display this year.

The folks over at Digitimes ran a story about the state of large display smartphones.

Windows Phone 8 inherently lacks support for HD resolutions, and this ultimately remains the main issue here. Microsoft has already reportedly starting work on the next version of its mobile OS. And an increased resolution is very much on the agenda.

Fingers crossed, the Redmond company decides to go all out this time around — with support for 720p and 1080p to become as future proof as possible.

Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone 8 model, the Lumia 920 comes with a 4.5-inch screen, and chances are the Finnish handset maker would and launch a 4.7-inch model later in the year.

This integral limitation means that other Windows Phone 8 partners (HTC, Samsung, and Huawei, among others) may also not jump into the 5-inch territory.

Apple has already launched its 4-inch iPhone 5 and seems to be in no hurry to up the screen size this soon, particularly with developers already optimizing their apps for the increased display. RIM’s top of the line model for the year is also reportedly set to get a maximum display of 4.2 inches.

This leaves Android as the only platform that will venture into the 5-inch screen size smartphones territory. Several 5-inch Android models are due this year from makers like HTC, Sharp, Sony, Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo and more.

And people said size does not matter. Ha!

What about you guys? How far would you go with this display size craziness? Under 5 inches or over? And more importantly what is the maximum size you prefer for one handed use? Comments, please.
