Nokia has just published its financial results for the third quarter of 2013, and a brief look at the numbers confirms that things are finally starting to look on the up for the Finnish telecom giant.
The company has recently been acquired by Microsoft (pending shareholders and authorities approval), but according to the interim report Lumia branded smartphones are starting to come into their own, not just around the globe, but also in North America.
Some 8.8 million Lumia smartphones were sold in Q3 2013, out of which no less than 1.4 million units were moved in North America — an almost 400 percent increase for the market when compared with last year’s figures.
In any case, these are some big numbers for the company that sold a mere 2.9 million Lumia devices in the same period a year back and 7.4 million units in the second quarter of last year.
The world of Windows Phone powered handsets can thank the Lumia 520 for this overall rise in sales. This affordable handset was also a major feature in the financial results for the second quarter of the year, and shows no signs of stopping.
Smartphones aside, the volume of mobile phones also increased 4 percent quarter-to-quarter, coming in at 55.8 million units, thanks in no small parts to some really affordable feature phones that Nokia recently released.

Great news. I’m looking forward to when they’re reporting 10+ million every quarter.
