App Watch: Metro Media Player

The highly anticipated VLC for Windows 8 may still be in the coding stage as of this writing, but that has not stopped Windows 8 users in their search for finding the best multimedia player for their new OS.

Metro Media player is an interesting little project that has grown into its own in the past few months. It supports most popular audio and video formats. The official description:

“Using a clean design, Metro Media Player removes all the clutter found in most modern media players. It is built to play your files, from your libraries.

MMP is perfect for playing education videos as it supports a simple swipe gesture for adjusting playback rate. MMP also works with mouse, keyboard, special media keys, media remotes as well as touch.”

Unfortunately the MKV format support is lacking as of this time, but the app can deal with SRT subtitle files, and also offers the PlayTo DLNA option to stream content from the device to a supported TV — a highly useful feature still missing on most media playing software.

The app is completely optimized for touch and available for all Windows 8 platforms including x86, x64 and ARM builds of the operating system.
