Redmond unveiled its second generation lineup of Surface tablets at the start of this week, and before the week way out signed it first major deal for Surface 2.
Delta has agreed to equip all its pilots with these Windows tablets.
WindowsITPro has the full story that revealed that while the initial agreement had the airline looking at Nokia’s upcoming Windows RT slate, it turns out that Microsoft convinced Delta officials to make the switch to the Surface 2.
Well, at least, we have further unofficial confirmation that a Nokia tablet is incoming.
Delta Airlines will now transition from its current BYOD system that allows pilots to bring their personal iPads to work. The airline company noted that it wants to maintain control by issuing a standard device across all its flights:
“In less than two years, Delta cockpits will be paperless as we roll-out the Microsoft Surface 2 tablet running Windows 8.1 RT as our company-issued device.
The 757/767 fleet will be the first to make the transition with the 777, 747 and MD88 as fast followers. Look for an announcement from Delta and Microsoft in the coming days about our partnership on the initiative.”
Pilots will start receiving the Surface 2 in the next couple of months.
More information on this, along with official formal announcements from Microsoft and Delta are expected in the coming days. But being presented by Microsoft at the event in New York City this Monday, the Surface 2 is sure off to a pretty good start.
