One of the more widespread Windows 8.1 rumors has been the inclusion of a Kiosk mode in the upcoming operating system. And now we have our first look at what it brings.
Just as the name suggests, the Kiosk mode is primarily aimed at businesses.
The latest leaked version of Windows 8.1 (build 9374) that made its way to the Internet over the weekend comes with the Kiosk mode installed by default and providing users with more information on what it offers.
At its core, this new option allows users to lock down their device in a single app experience — essentially allowing them to limit computer access and set up restrictions.
Businesses like stores, retail outlets and more can just launch a single application that can be used for demo purposes — think a scrolling promotional text or a video advertisement that plays continuously.
This lockdown of a computer with emphasis on a single functionality is surely something that will be a welcome addition to the operating system, particularly for corporate, organizations and enterprises, even educational institutes.
It will allow them the effortlessly deploy Windows 8 on their Kiosk displays right out of the box.
While there are no official guarantees that Microsoft will keep this option in the final version of Windows 8.1, but this leaked screenshot suggests that such a possibility is very much likely. Expect more on this in the weeks and months to come.
Maybe this is their solution to boot-to-desktop. People could just set up the desktop to boot directly to.
@oobgular:disqus I agree with your suggestion. It seems to me that the desktop behaves rather like a complex Modern UI app. Like other such apps, it is opened from a tile on the start screen. (Likewise it can be selected by sweeping in from the left just like other Modern UI apps. And it has its own appropriate responses to the charms.) Perhaps in the future we will see the desktop as a free (or paid?) downloadable app in the Windows Store (only available for X86/X64 processors).
