When it comes to the technology world in general, the need for speed is always on. On the mobile front, however, the heat for performance supremacy is taking a turn for the interesting.
Both Intel and AMD are about kick their mobile ambitions into high gear with newer, faster and much more power efficient solutions. In other news, ARM is ready to tear up the charts with word on the street that upcoming 20nm ARM based mobile processors are to clock at over 3GHz.
This is lightning fast speed, whichever way one looks at it.
Future high-end smartphones and tablets could arrive with processor clocks crossing the 3GHz barrier, all thanks to the new 20nm production method.
According to reports at Fudzilla and PhoneArena, TSMC, a leading chip maker from Taiwan, is said to be working on 20 nanometer ARM processors. These new chips are reported to consume up to 25 percent less energy than the 28nm solutions that are currently available.
All this, while also being able to deliver 30 percent more performance.
This new manufacturing process allows them to translate to speeds of over 3GHz inside mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. This year’s high-end Snapdragon 800 CPU, for comparison, can reach speeds of 2.3GHz per core.
These new mobile chips are on track to enter production next year, and should make the fight between processor rivals AMD, ARM and Intel one to keep an eye on.
What this also means is that Windows RT devices could well be able to match x86 solutions blow by blow. Microsoft is currently finishing up Windows RT 8.1, and though interest from hardware vendors for the Windows RT platform is said to be dwindling, Redmond is putting its weight behind the platform.
